You never could tell what the professorial powers of Hogwarts would decide was worth forcing on people, and what they would simply announce, as if it was an option like any other option, Herman reflected. Self defense class for those willing to give up an evening, as if the time commitment were the only issue any student might consider.

Of course, the word around the Slytherin dorms was that self defense for dummies wasn't something any self respecting Slytherin student would consider attending, but Herman had an answer for that. How else to properly make fun of evaluate the quality of the class, but by attending?

The excuse seemed to pass muster, though the mood around Slytherin since the students returned from Christmas hols was so sullen it was hard to really tell what anyone was thinking. And so Herman found himself at the back of the room, arms crossed and a skeptical expression on his face as he listened to how to identify an emergency situation. The actions advised seemed to be the coward's way out; distract and run, did they think they were talking to incompetents? This was the sixth and seventh year session, couldn't they come up with--

Herman was distracted from his thoughts by a sudden change in method. "Find a partner and practice faking them out," the professor said. "All you need is a moment, anything surprising will do..."

If he'd known it was going to come to that, Herman would have payed more attention to who he was sitting next to. As it was, he turned to his neighbor and raised an eyebrow. "Well?" he asked.

Amycus Carrow = squat, lumpy, stupid giggle, really bad sense of humor.

Alecto = resembles her brother.

So why would someone use Elisha Cuthbert for Alecto?

Sarah Michelle Gellar is not my first choice for Narcissa, either.

Need to do stuff at 12GP. Also need to do stuff at RR. Other games are pretty much okay.

My best friend is in town, but thankfully she is a very sensible best friend and also likes to have time to sit and relax and computerize. This is probably the reason for the best-friendness. But I am still kind of tired; I am used to a lot more time to myself.

Hay guyz guess what I dyed my hair. It's black! I have wanted black hair since I was about thirteen, so it only took me about half my life. Could be worse.

Speaking of which, there need to be goths at BNW. I personally think it would be hilarious if Nix was one, because is it possible to have a gothier name than Nyx (because she would go by that, of course) Stone? Well, probably. But she should still be a goth. And I think one of Dennis' daughters should be a goth too, because they are both Puffs and the Goth Hufflepuff is a fantastic concept.

Alright, here is the post where I say that I'm going on hiatus for a week or so.

We all know that's about as true as me saying the sky is purple, but whatever.

Deal is, I'm moving tomorrow to my apartment up by school. My apartment which at the moment is severly lacking in the cable and internet area of life. This has not stopped me before and I highly doubt it will seriously stop me now.

The plan is to meet with cable/interent next week sometime. In the meantime there is a coffeeshop a few blocks away which has WiFi and also campus which I can access. Granted, this will sucessfully limit my nettime, but I promise I WILL return and be back in the full swing of things as soon as I'm able to!

Did everyone's spirits wither away to die in a loo someplace? Seems like it.

There's a Quidditch match coming up and I haven't received so much as a shove. By now I would have gotten at least an elbow-jab.

Let's look alive, people. We're not dead yet.

I would flail in frustration if I had the energy

I am tired and I want to go home. I've been here half the day. Isn't that enough?

I FEEL SO BROKE UP. LET ME GO HOME. PLEASE.

Well, it seems that another birthday has come and gone. Uneventful and, as always, without notice. Not that I am complaining, I assure you. The last thing I really wanted was some large fuss made over the anniversary of my birth. Another year older. Oh joy and rapture.

I have to say -- I am quite impressed with the work put out these past few weeks. It seems that the Christmas holidays went a long way towards boosting not only morale but your scores as well. Please, keep up the excellent work.

Has anyone heard anything as far as what has been going on? All seems to be quiet on the proverbial western front but it seems too quiet.

[Hexed to Dora]
Is everything alright with you? It's been... dare I say ... quiet around here.

I debated whether to post this on LJ or IJ, and almost went with LJ because it's entirely real-life-related. But I finally chose to bring it here because one, I already posted on LJ today (an interestingly stupid cleaning-fumes-and-starvation-inspired ramble about the evils of scrubbing one's bathtub) and two, I don't want it to get back to my roommates.

Here's the situation: Heather, who the rest of us sub-lease through, is not the most stable person in the world. You wouldn't think it to look at her, but it's true. She has amazing amounts of stress, but she goes to therapy regularly and has been coping pretty well this summer. Her friend Sabrina was going to move in with us this fall. Nate is a very talented, personable and supposedly attractive (not my type at all, but tastes differ wildly) guy that Heather has been in love with for at least a year.

Tonight Sabrina told Heather that Nate was interested in dating her. Her as in Sabrina.

So Sabrina's not moving in anymore, and Heather is very upset and went to her mom's for the weekend. (Roommate Carlina, who just came back tonight, thinks the whole thing is kind of funny. Carlina has a very strange sense of humor sometimes.) Not just because Nate's interested in Sabrina, but because Sabrina might actually date him. She's not sure yet because he's in the Dominican Republic right now (Sabrina was there for part of the summer too, and apparently that is where all this happened) and she won't know what's going on until he gets back.

I personally think it's kind of lame for her to even consider dating a guy Heather's that crazy about. Even if nothing's ever going to happen between him and Heather, you shouldn't really do that.

But on the other hand, is it really right to pass up something that could turn out to be wonderful and just what you needed and wanted just because you might upset someone else?

Me? Yes. In a heartbeat. I'd totally pass it up, probably without even thinking about it, because established friendships are more important to me than the slight chance of finding romance. And I'd probably never tell that friend because even knowing about it would probably hurt a lot. So it really surprised me that Sabrina would consider it, because I just assumed everyone was that way. I guess not, though.

I don't know. What would you do?

So.... who did kill the muggles?

Was it... ALIENS?

Nah, I'm just curious and wondering whether we're supposed to know or whatever. Especially those of us who play DEs, are we supposed to have them chime in with details? Am slightly confused.

You know what I'd forgotten was fun? Developing characters through my own mistakes or bursts of stupidity. Like... Meaghan at CQ calling Parvati Harvati "LIKE THE CHEESE!!!!!!" was because I thought it was funny and didn't realize that Meaghan was not very adventurous when it came to food and probably wouldn't even know what Havarti was. Teddy just called a young, unmarried woman Madame because I suddenly blanked on how to spell Mademoiselle (...was that right? I'm still not sure!).

Bottom line, I need to loosen up and not only let my characters make mistakes, but let myself make them too. Mistakes are not a death sentence in writing! They make things fun, because in explaining them away you have to be creative! It's like roughhousing with my little brother - you use everyfreakingthing at your disposal, elbows, pillows, (paperback) books... and I have noooo idea if that made any sense, but, uh, whatever.

I have been listening to The Format at work on our music-shary-ma-jig, so I downloaded the songs from that album, but I SWEAR The First Single is a different version on the work thingy. This version says "straight line, baby, straight, straight line," but the work one says "straight line down" or something like that. I want that version, argh. But I think it's going to be just as impossible to find that as it proved to find the acoustic version of Howard Jones' Everlasting Love. Oh well.

I need to get a Teddy icon on here. Hmm.

Hexed against murderers, kidnappers, death eaters, and criminals of all sorts

Making Sense of the World

Just a candle, a wand, and a word,
And a flame to let you see.
It's the oldest form of divination
As old as the sky and the sea.

And the flame burns high,
The visions sear.
Truth or lie?
No pity here.

Just a candle, a flame, and a prayer
And the world is a room with a draft
Keeping the flame takes concentration
Don't listen, but somebody laughed.

And the flame burns low,
But the visions sear.
Did you want to know?
Still no mercy here.

Just a flame, a moment of meditation,
A vision, a silent cry
Nature is violent without calculation
Only humans lie.

Did you know...?
Only humans lie.

Did you know that fire is holy?
Did you know that fire burns?
Can you see the past in a conflagration?
Can you see the future, will anyone learn?

Just a flame in the wind, manic laughter next door
And a curse on your lips and hot wax on the floor
You're standing there waiting for inspiration
You know in your heart there has to be more.

Did you know that fire's for consecration?
Did you know that fire burns?
What happens if everyone yields to temptation?
If the world turns to ash who will mourn for creation?
Does anyone have any explanation?
Does anyone think we'll learn?
